San Bernardino ARFF Training Center

This facility incorporates a fuel spill fire trainer and specialized aircraft fire trainer similar to the Alaska Regional Fire Training Facility but accommodates the Western Regional Fire Training area needs. The Joint Commission consisting of the City of San Bernardino, the County of San Bernardino, and Crafton Hills Community College combined their staff and assets to promote this facility. As an educational facility in the state of California, the project fell under regulation by the office of the State Architect and required state of California inspector of record certification. This project also fell under the State of California Coastal Review scrutiny. K+A was able to negotiate through the agencies in-depth reviews and satisfy all regulatory requirements in an expeditious manner. Project elements included planning and design of a runway incursion virtual reality classroom, library, access roads, and an off-road driving course for ARFF vehicles. The 25,172 square foot, two story training building includes classrooms, offices, locker rooms, and attached vehicle storage bays. The second level control tower is used as the command center and observation deck for live-burn training exercises. K+A was able to design and facilitate the successful completion of this project from its Kenai design studio.
